What is hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a common condition which causes excess perspiration. It doesn’t pose a serious risk to health, but it is understandably upsetting and can have a significant impact on quality of life. Over time, hyperhidrosis can also lead to the development of depression and anxiety as a result of the stress caused by managing symptoms daily.
Most people suffer with primary hyperhidrosis, which is thought to be linked to problems with the parts of the nervous system that control sweating. There are also some known causes of hyperhidrosis including hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause (hot flushes), low blood sugar, anxiety, hyperhidrosis and side effects of certain medications.
Without proper medical treatment it isn’t possible to stop hyperhidrosis – instead, most people who suffer with excessive sweating tend to simply manage the symptoms day to day through not wearing certain types of clothing, using strong anti-perspirant or avoiding triggers. But this can prove incredibly stressful and challenging, especially if hyperhidrosis is severe or unpredictable. Thankfully, innovative new treatments are offering long-lasting relief for those affected by hyperhidrosis.
Botulinum toxin treatment is incredibly effective for treating primary hyperhidrosis and has a very high success rate. In studies, botulinum toxin treatment has been shown to reduce excessive sweating decreases by more than 85%.
This pioneering treatment works through targeted injections which reduce the ability of the nerves to send signals to the sweat glands, preventing excessive sweating as a result. Most commonly botulinum toxin treatment is used in the underarm area and for palmar hyperhidrosis (the hands), but it can be used in many different areas of the body.
There are many different physical and emotional benefits and advantages of hyperhidrosis treatment, including:
